SoFi vs LightStream Personal Loan (2026)

8 oct 2026 ·

Advertiser: Every figure below comes from the lender’s own website or a named independent source, and we explain our method at the end of the article.

SoFi and LightStream are two of the best-known online lenders for borrowers with good to excellent credit. Both lend up to $100,000, charge no mandatory fees, and can fund your loan the same day you sign. On paper they look alike, but they differ in ways that can change what you pay.

SoFi lets you check your rate without a hard credit pull and stacks several rate discounts. LightStream has a much lower maximum APR, longer terms for big projects, and a program that tries to beat competing offers. But you can’t preview your rate there without a hard inquiry.

Below we compare both side by side, using terms each lender published as of October 8, 2026.

Quick verdict

  • Choose SoFi if you want to see your rate first with a soft credit check, or if you’ll use SoFi checking or direct deposit to get an extra discount.
  • Choose LightStream if your credit is excellent, you have a competing offer it can beat, or you’re financing a large home project and need more than seven years to repay.
  • Smart order: prequalify with SoFi first (no impact on your score). If your SoFi offer is weak, then apply to LightStream with that number in hand.

SoFi vs LightStream at a glance

Rates and fees: what a loan really costs

Both lenders start with low APRs for top-tier borrowers. The big gap is at the top: SoFi’s APR can reach 35.49%, while LightStream’s reported ceiling is about 25%. That’s because LightStream only approves good-to-excellent credit profiles, so it doesn’t lend at the riskiest rates.

SoFi’s official example: a $30,000 loan

SoFi publishes the cost of a $30,000 loan with no origination fee. The APRs include its 0.25% autopay discount and 0.25% member discount.

Why the APR ceiling matters

Take the same $30,000 loan over five years. At SoFi’s top APR of 35.49%, the payment is $1,074 a month and the total is about $64,450. At 24.94%, the top of the range NerdWallet reports for LightStream, the payment drops to about $879 and the total to about $52,770.

That’s roughly $11,700 less. But it only helps if LightStream approves you. If your credit is only good, not excellent, SoFi may be the lender that says yes.

Fees

  • SoFi charges no mandatory fees. Some offers let you choose an optional origination fee of up to 7% in exchange for a lower interest rate. Only take it if you compare the APR and it’s actually lower.
  • LightStream charges no origination, late or prepayment fees. In Florida, a state documentary stamp tax is added to the loan.

How to lower your rate

  • SoFi: 0.25% off for autopay. Another 0.25% off with the member discount, for example a qualifying direct deposit into a SoFi account or a SoFi Plus subscription. Another 0.25% off with Direct Pay, if at least 50% of your loan goes straight to your creditors.
  • LightStream: its quoted rates already assume AutoPay; without it, rates are 0.50 points higher. Its Rate Beat program offers 0.10 points less than a competing lender’s approved unsecured rate, if you can show the offer.

Eligibility and credit score

Neither lender is built for bad credit. LightStream is the stricter of the two.

SoFi requirements

SoFi doesn’t publish a minimum credit score. NerdWallet says borrowers usually need good or excellent credit, around 690 or higher. You can apply with a co-borrower, and both of you are then responsible for repayment. If you’re declined, you must wait 30 days before reapplying with the same borrower(s).

LightStream requirements

LightStream says it «only approves good-to-excellent credit profiles.» It looks for:

  • Several years of credit history with a mix of account types
  • Evidence that you save, such as retirement, investment or cash accounts
  • Stable income that comfortably covers your debts
  • A good payment record with few or no late payments

Joint applications are allowed, and each applicant is reviewed equally. Co-signers are not accepted. LightStream loans also can’t be used for business purposes, buying cryptocurrency, or refinancing an existing LightStream loan.

The credit check difference

This is the biggest practical difference. SoFi checks your rate with a soft pull that doesn’t affect your score. LightStream has no prequalification on its site: its application triggers a hard inquiry from TransUnion or Equifax, which may lower your score slightly. That’s why we suggest checking SoFi first.

Loan amounts, terms and funding speed

Loan size. Both lenders lend between $5,000 and $100,000. If you need less than $5,000, neither is a fit.

Terms. SoFi offers 2 to 7 years. LightStream’s terms run from 24 to 240 months depending on what the loan is for. NerdWallet reports most purposes top out at 7 years, while large home improvement loans can stretch to 20 years.

Funding. Both can pay out the same business day:

  • SoFi: most borrowers get funds the same day if the loan is approved and signed by 5:30 p.m. ET on a business day. Direct Pay transfers to creditors can take about three business days.
  • LightStream: funds can arrive the same day if you e-sign, give your banking details and finish verification by 2:30 p.m. ET on a banking business day.

In both cases, delays are possible and your bank’s processing time matters.

If neither fits

If your credit is fair or you’re still building it, look at lenders that accept lower scores or co-signers. We compare them in our guides to Upgrade vs Upstart and the best personal loans for fair credit. For home projects, also compare a home equity line of credit (HELOC), which can carry a lower rate because your home secures it.

How we compared these lenders

We compared both lenders on five factors: APR range, fees, eligibility, loan amounts and terms, and funding speed. We took every figure we could from the lender’s official website, checked on October 8, 2026. LightStream doesn’t list its full APR range on its public pages, so we cite the independent reviewers that report it and show where their figures differ.

We did not apply for these loans ourselves. Rates and terms change often, so we review this comparison at least once every quarter.

Frequently asked questions

Is SoFi or LightStream better for excellent credit?

LightStream often has the edge for borrowers with excellent credit, long credit histories and solid savings. It charges no fees and its reported maximum APR is about 25%. SoFi can still match it, especially if you qualify for all three of its discounts, so compare both offers.

Does checking my rate hurt my credit score?

At SoFi, no: it uses a soft credit pull. LightStream has no prequalification on its website, and its application triggers a hard inquiry, which can lower your score slightly.

Can I get a personal loan the same day?

Often, yes. SoFi usually funds the same day if you sign by 5:30 p.m. ET on a business day. LightStream can fund the same day if you sign and finish verification by 2:30 p.m. ET.

Do SoFi or LightStream charge origination fees?

LightStream doesn’t charge any fees. SoFi’s standard offers have no origination fee, but some offers let you choose an optional fee of up to 7% for a lower interest rate.

What is LightStream’s Rate Beat program?

If another lender approves you for an unsecured loan with a lower rate, LightStream will offer a rate 0.10 percentage points lower. The competing offer must be available to borrowers with a similar credit profile, and you must have been approved for it before LightStream funds your loan.

Can I apply with someone else?

Yes. Both lenders accept joint applications, and both applicants share responsibility for the loan. LightStream does not accept co-signers.
